Rendering with Photon Maps

چکیده
The presentation of a recent addition to the suite of popular global illumination rendering methods is the focus of this thesis. The photon map comprises a particle transport simulation with a density estimate characterized by independency of the scene geometry and the ability to efficiently model diffuse global illumination and caustics. Its embedding in existing ray tracing environments is straightforward; an implementation of the photon map and its integration in the Minimal Rendering Toolkit (MRT) is described in detail.

Rendering of Caustics with Photon Maps
A number of techniques exist for approximating the rendering equation in order to create realistic detailed images. Photon mapping is a method that allows for the accurate rendering of a wide range of reflective and refractive phenomena. We explore the basis of the photon mapping technique with the goal of constructing a system for rendering such effects, particularly in regard to caustics. Our...
متن کاملA Practical Guide to Global Illumination using Photon Mapping
This course serves as a practical guide to photon maps. Any reader who can implement a ray tracer should be able to add an efficient implementation of photon maps to his or her ray tracer after attending this course and reading the course notes. There are many reasons to augment a ray tracer with photon maps. Photon maps makes it possible to efficiently compute global illumination including cau...
متن کاملGlobal Illumination using Photon Maps
This paper presents a two pass global illumination method based on the concept of photon maps. It represents a significant improvement of a previously described approach both with respect to speed, accuracy and versatility. In the first pass two photon maps are created by emitting packets of energy (photons) from the light sources and storing these as they hit surfaces within the scene. We use ...
متن کاملExtending the photon mapping method for realistic rendering of hot gaseous fluids
With the increased sophistication and use of heated gas, fire, and explosion simulations in computer graphics applications, there is a corresponding impetus to improve the visual realism in the rendering of such simulated phenomena. In visualizing these turbulent fluids, an appropriate incorporation of their incandescent properties into the rendering significantly enhances the realism of visual...
متن کاملA Practical Algorithm for Rendering All-Frequency Interreflections
Algorithms for rendering interreflection (or indirect illumination) effects often make assumptions about the frequency range of the materials’ reflectance properties. For example, methods based on Virtual Point Lights (VPLs) and global photon maps perform well for diffuse and semi-glossy materials but not so for highly-glossy or specular materials; the situation is reversed for methods based on...
